Written in 1927 and translated here into Turkish by Kerem Tuğran, this essay maps supernatural fiction across ten chapters — from the first English Gothic novels through Poe, the continental ghost tradition, and the modern masters: Machen, Blackwood, M.R. James. Lovecraft evaluates each writer not by reputation but by their capacity to transmit what he identifies as the oldest and most powerful human emotion: fear of the unknown, coeval with religious feeling, rooted deeper than reason. The central argument holds that genuine weird fiction is not moral instruction or narrative threat — it is a philosophical dread before external and unknown forces, the defeat of natural law at the edges of the cosmos. Read alongside his fiction, the essay is a self-portrait. Published in Turkish by Bonobo Press, November 2023.
